Sunflower Star, Rebecca Johnson, California Academy of Sciences;
Community members are invited to join Trinidad Coastal Land Trust for a guided sea star search on Thursday, December 22 from 3:30pm to sunset at Baker Beach, south of Trinidad on Scenic Drive. This guided walk is part of a statewide Solstice Sea Star Search with Cal Academy of Sciences and The Nature Conservancy. Come help us seek out as many sea stars as possible! Please register by emailing [email protected] or call (707)677-2501.
The Solstice Sea Start Search takes place from December 20-23rd to encourage community members across the state to visit the intertidal zone and document each sea star species they see on iNaturalist. Sea stars are integral to ocean health and their disappearance in association with sea star wasting disease sends ripples throughout coastal ecosystems. Sunflower sea stars, incredibly important tide pool predators, are especially important to document. If you are lucky enough to find a Sunflower sea star, you can report it at bit.ly/sunflowerspotted and send the iNat observation link to [email protected].
