I am so glad Ryan Burns was honored for his story on Pelican Bay State Prison. I was unable to convience the (new) editor at the time , that Pelican Bay was an important matter. Something changed and the story was written. There are so many layers, aspects, to this prison system that were not explored. My hope is that Ryan will do part two, three and four so that all of us can maybe understand what prison as we know it really does to human beings and then perhaps be moved to change the system to something that hepls rather than harms.
So simplistic to offer "well don't commit crimes". Crime happens, always has always will, sad truth. Most of the imprisoned are people of color. Almost all the guards etc. are white. Under educated guards who really don't like people of color and they get paid quite well to torture these inmates in ways you / we will never know. It's sick. It's really a very sick system. Shame on all of us.
Marcy nailed it!! I have been begging the program director at KHSU to make some programming changes for a really long time .....add new stuff, take away some old stuff and re invent ourselves.!! Full disclosure here..I am one of the relics (my word not hers) Marcy refers to. There are a bunch of us "olders" at the station and I would rather die than for the "olders" to be put to pasture.
Without a doubt there is room for a ton of change and we must have the young ones to continue.
I have , over the years brought young voices to my show and to the station.
Only with the publics desire for change will it happen and even that is no guarantee...

Re: “River Robbery”
For the past few weeks beginning just after 5 P.M, I have been watching these very very long and fancy flat bed trucks driving down Hwy 255 on their way to Fox Farm Soil Company where the soil is made. I can see 255 from my place and watch each evening as 30 or more trucks go by. I called Fox farm last week and was assured that those trucks were not going there. In Fact the gal told me that all deliveries stop at 3:30. So, yesterday we did our own investigation and guess what we learned? The trucker we spoke to at 7:30 P.M said they are from Oregon and are delivering mulch. So add that to the carbon foot print! Five days a week, 30 or more trucks each evening, delivering mulch from Oregon. Do we not have mulch in Humboldt?? Anyway, I am disappointed in the fact that the folks from Fox farm were dishonest with me. shame on them.
