I'm a little disappointed that the article didn't suggest that students may prefer to take trim jobs because it's temporary, you can do the work in one or two days, there's no background check/application/waiting for an interview involved, and no long-term commitment. There's more freedom with a schedule and you can be hooked up with a trim job last minute. I think the only kind of jobs that ever hired me on short notice were in food service, and I gotta say that I would rather do "sticky and tedious" work trimming than at McDonald's.
I would also like to point out that the article overlooked how lucrative marijuana related jobs are. Sure, the non-marijuana related income is higher, BUT the difference is ~$2300/5 months. The marijuana related jobs made more than half of the non-marijuana related income in less than half the amount of time. You do the math.
Of the people who I've encountered who have taken trim or other marijuana related jobs, I have been told that they usually took those jobs because they needed extra cash and they happened to know a person who is looking to hire (aka their "guy"). I really don't think that it's because of the allure of counter-culture or that it's rebellious, as this article suggests.
