Plants are beautiful, useful, and crucial for terrestrial ecosystems. They are also fascinating beings whose lives are predicated by constraints in many ways alien to those that are fundamental to our own lives, from reproductive biology to the way they are put together and grow. Plants have been around for more than 400 million years and the fossil record holds the keys to many of the singular aspects of plant-ness.
