Re: “Online Fortuna Fire Comments Spark Controversy

Winburn is clearly unfamiliar with how the internets work. Also the First Amendment.

Re: “Slip, Sliding Away

Foghorn....did you even read the article? Apparently not. Are you an engineer? A geologist? Experienced in road construction? If not, then your faux "expertise" is simply opinion unsupported by facts. Driving the road in an RV "many times" does not an expert make.

Kurt- it's s tough situation with no easy answer, obviously. Glad to hear that there's a stakeholders group and that Jared Huffman is on it. I hope the re-routing happens in time or we're all going to need those new flying cars...

Re: “Human Rights Fight

Richard D. Brown is coming from a place of white male privilege in his comment which demonstrates quite nicely why we have reached the point that it is necessary for our public officials to affirm the very obvious fact that equal rights are for EVERYONE. His 'I've got mine" attitude is part of the problem. Sad!

Re: “Attorneys: Fortuna Mom Standing by to Surrender in Fatal Hit and Run Case

Two young people are dead including her own daughter, she flees the scene and she's "negotiating" her surrender? And already has an attorney? Give me break.

Re: “Return of the Minor

What I loved about the pre-Coming Attractions Minor Theater was that is was the place one could go to see classic old movies on the big screen and the more artsy Oscar nominees, including foreign films and documentaries. And I can guarantee you that if they show something like Errol Flynn's Robin Hood the local SCA contingent will show up in force and in medieval garb. Many years ago we did that for Kenneth Branaugh's Henry V at the Arcata Theater and it was a blast. Why not do a festival of classic adventure movies like those? Can't get much more family-friendly than that.

Re: “To Bamboo or Not to Bamboo

I planted four varieties of clumping bamboo eight years ago and am not having any problems with invasiveness. I have Chusquea curleou as a hedge to block sight of the next door property, plua a Himalayan blue bamboo, Alphonse Karr and a timber bamboo that struggled in one spot, moved it and seems to be getting going in light shade. Of course the "clumpers" spread, but there's absolutely no comparison to what a running bamboo wil do. Unbelievable that anyone who considers themselves qualified to write about gardening and plants would recommend "a super toxic herbicide" at all, much less first on the list.

Re: “When the Shark Bites

The moral of this story for both parties and any other artists out there doing similar work, having been a freelance graphic designer for 15 years before moving on to fine art painting is....GET IT IN WRITING. For every single job before starting work, in this case, every individual label, t-shirt, mug, whatever. A contract form would be best, but even an informal Letter of Confirmation at least sets out what the parties have agreed to (like for instance, $1 a shirt royalties). This includes what rights the client gets. For a job like a beer label, I would expect that the client would get all rights for a flat fee. For the designer, get 1/3 up front, 1/3 upon approval of the design, 1/3 net 30 on delivery. All of the unhappiness could have probably been avoided if Duane and Barbara had done this. Really a shame all around.
