Re: “Passing the Virtual Hat

I think it's sad when a so-called creative person can't fund their own CD release or tour. Do you have a job, or are you getting money from the government (welfare)? I wonder, because I work a real job and have never had any trouble pressing some cd's or doing a short tour. You don't need a grand to dupe some cd's. In fact, you can do it for around $100. Personally, I'd feel like a loser if I had to ask other people to give me money to fund my creative ventures. If you're making illegal money, then I guess you have to maintain the facade that you need financial help. That's common around here. Now as far as touring goes, that's another problem, because again, if you can't fund your own music then you must either suck or have bad spending habits. This is even more true for some bands mentioned in the article, (and also some not mentioned that have used these startup sites) that bring in a good amount of $$ from performing live. I know for a fact that some bands around here can bring in hundreds if not over a thousand for one night of performing. I see a problem when such acts cannot save up a couple g's to go on a tour. They're probably also growing or trimming weed and making plenty off of that. It's just wrong to ask for handouts unless you really need it. There was once a thing called DIY. It means DO IT YOURSELF. THAT is something to take pride in. Having a lot of "friends" online, or being savvy at swindling facebook users out of their hard earned $$ is another skill entirely. Lame.

Re: “The Logger Reborn

The Logger is one of the best venues in the county. People show up, there are no hobos in the street asking for handouts, and it's always a great time playing there. I hope they bothered to fix the electrical issues because that was the only downside in my experience.

Re: “A Song for Bill

I think that song made me stupider and I could only stand about 5 seconds of it. Uninspired drivel, just like so many "musicians" from humboldt. No passion.

Re: “So, Jimmy Kimmel Doesn't Think Humboldt State's New Weed Institute Sounds All That Necessary

That was hilarious! A great example of how stupid some people up here can be.....dude, I organized a drum circle and was part of a club dedicated to the liberation of musical instruments... Wow, I don't think Jimmy had to try very hard to rip on that guy or people like him. I guarantee it will be a waste of time. Classic!

Re: “When Weed is Legal

I'm all for legalization. Let these growers get creative and find new ways to make money that actually enrich the community. This place can stand to be taken down a notch or two. Maybe it would motivate some folks to move away. Maybe it would cause HSU enrollment to drop. Maybe rents and the cost of buying a home would be reasonable for the average person who works a job. Maybe the black market scenes would dwindle into obscurity. Maybe the good growers would take up some farmers market spaces and offer the best weed in the country just because they enjoy growing it. I believe there are very few of those type of growers. Most do it for the easy profits and so they don't have to work and live on a "normal" schedule, or don't have to move away from this hippie mecca. It's lame. Fuck you to the growers and 215 bullshit. Legalize it already and let's move on.

Re: “Letter from Lila

Who cares is correct. It's just an opinion. I was originally put off by the article and photos of the High Times girl. Then I commented on the Lila photo with a similar outlook. There was something cheesy about it. I also agreed that she is maybe overhyped.

I don't know about pathetic, maybe discrete is more appropriate. It's not ok to say what you mean in a happy little place like Humboldt County. People might think you are evil, or republican, or liberal. I guess it depends on what circles you travel in. I think it's better to keep the real opinions anonymous sometimes. Some might disagree.

Bob, the point would be the same if it was a homage to Alice Cooper--not very conveying of her music. I think she should look like she's having fun in her photos. Not embarrased by a lame photo shoot, or trying to look overly serious. *Shrug* Does that come off as mean? I feel like I'm offering a valid opinion.

Re: “Letter from Lila

BTW, I'm referring to her posters around town. Not that one posted above of her flipping the bird. I'm speaking of the one where she looks pregnant and just stares off into space), the one with her bending over and flashing extra cleavage. That photo above is of a different style, but it doesn't portray her accurately from what I've seen and heard. Looks even more fake than the others considering she's all soft spoken, politically correct and groovy in real life. Middle fingers are reserved for musicians with hateful attitudes. Like punks! I'd equate that pose to a nerdy guy with socks and sandals giving the devils horns--It just doesn't look right
