These delightful short pieces, praised by Brahms, are charming examples of his work for four-hand piano. Not specifically connected to folktales, they have echoes of ballads, wartime marches and love stories. The music inspires the imagination with quicksilver changes in mood, twists and turns, and lovely melodies. Annette and Nancy have also found a “new” work by Debussy: Première Suite d’orchestre. It was probably written in 1882 to 1884 while he was a student at the Conservatoire de Paris. There are two manuscripts: one for four-hand piano and an orchestrated version. The first and last movements are brisk and celebratory; the second is a charming ballet, and the third is lush, dreamy and rich in nuance. PianoVoce has found another great voice in Carl McGahan. His rich and expressive sound fills the love songs of Vaughan-Williams’ House of Life. These contrast with the chilling dirges of Four Walt Whitman Songs, by Kurt Weill. Weill is known primarily for his collaboration with Bertold Brecht in Threepenny Opera. After Weill left prewar Germany, and came to the United States, he turned his brilliant composition skills to the Broadway stage; but these settings of Whitman poetry also showcase Weill’s considerable ability to make music that hums with life and tension. The concert is a fundraiser for The Trinidad Library Children's book fund. Trinidad Town Hall is the home of a fine Steinway grand piano to add to the musical experience. A $10 donation is suggested.
