Patrick’s Point Native Plant Garden Anniversary

In 1973, the Patrick’s Point Garden Club established the Native Plant Garden at Patrick’s Point State Park. More than 50 species grace the site, including western azalea, Labrador tea, tan oak, and large specimens of vine maple and Pacific dogwood.

A 40th birthday celebration for the will be held on Saturday, June 1, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Schedule of events:

• 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Tours of native plant garden with Jenny Hanson, Tom Leskiw, Carol Ralph, Virginia Waters, Sylvia White, Donna Wildearth, and Bev Zeman.

• 9-11:30 a.m. Bird/plant walk led by Gary Lester. Meet along Patrick’s Point Drive at Park entrance.

• 10:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Hike led by Bill Knight. Loop through Native Plant Garden, Sumeg Village, Ceremonial Rock, Wedding Rock, Patrick’s Point, and Palmer’s Point. Meet at Visitor Center.

• 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. & 1-2 p.m. Tours of Sumeg Village led by Park interpreter Nancy Jo Martin (11:30 a.m.) and Skip Lowry of Yurok, Maidu, and Pit River descent (1 p.m.). Meet at covered cook shelter.

Event sponsors are Redwood Region Audubon Society, the North Coast Chapter of the California Native Plant Society, North Group Sierra Club, and Redwood National & State Parks, who will have table displays and handouts.

There is an $8 per car day use fee for entering the park past the kiosk at the Visitor Center.
