I have enjoyed Arcata for 40 years. The small business owners are friendly and helpful - who needs Walmart - the farmers market is one of the best I've been to in my travels, and there are some really good restaurants as well. I only wish I could park longer than 2 hours before moving my car far enough to cover the chalk line.
Hail to Cypress Grove for their wonderful ' grown in Humboldt' products and their ethical business practices. I just made a wedding cake from 3 layers of Humboldt Fog and Truffle Tremor decorated with dahlias. It was a hit at my daughter's wedding in Montana.
In other small towns I have seen public bathrooms work. They are often supported by all the businesses. Interesting that in other countries, an attendant is present and often a very small fee for bathroom use, therefor providing a job to someone as well as a clean public toilet.
