Open Comment Period and Public Meetings for Greater Prairie Creek Ecosystem Restoration Projects

The California Department of Parks and Recreation (CDPR) and National Park Service (NPS), under the banner of Redwoods Rising, have jointly prepared environmental review documents (Initial Study/Environmental Assessment) for two restoration projects—the Greater Mill Creek and the Greater Prairie Creek ecosystem restoration projects—within Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP). Both projects seek to thin degraded young forests, remove failing logging roads, and enhance aquatic habitat for threatened fish. The Greater Prairie Creek project will implement restoration across 9,200 acres in the Prairie Creek watershed and the Greater Mill Creek project will implement restoration across 34,000 acres in the Mill Creek watershed.
Redwood National and State Park staff are hosting two public meetings to answer public questions about these projects:
· On April 16, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the National Park Service North Operations Center, 500 Aubell Lane, Crescent City for the Greater Mill Creek Project.
· On April 17, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Federal Office Building at 1655 Heindon Road, Arcata for the Greater Prairie Creek Project.
The public meetings will be an open house format with park staff available to discuss specific aspects of the project and environmental documents. Cards will be available for participant comments.
