The month of May is filled with art. Here's just some:
At Saturday's Arts Alive! Jennifer Metz is showing beautiful paintings on silk at Humboldt Baykeeper. Three of my favorites are Blooming Lotus, Beginnings and Home Visions. Her lyrical artist's statement is "I paint because I am alive and I love life."
C Street Hall Gallery is presenting Face To Face, Women Artists Painting Women Artists, with partial proceeds from sales benefiting Planned Parenthood. "The show is a perfect venue to express support for the services Planed Parenthood has provided to us, mostly uninsured, women artists," said Rachel Schlueter, one of 13 well-known women artists participating in this exciting, possibly annual event. There are two evening openings: Friday May 6 and Saturday May 7.
Catch it before it's gone: Schoolhouse Odyssey, photographs by Diana Schoenfeld at the Morris Graves Museum through May 8.
Fortunately, the eye-catching masks by Allison Reed will continue to be on display at Los Bagels through May, definitely worth a second look. Also worth a return visit is the split show at First Street Gallery, Jim McVicker and Steve Porter's seascapes in the front, HSU Printmakers in the back. If one of the prints tickles your fancy, I highly recommend checking out the price list. Prints are often an affordable way to bring art home.
And speaking of Jim McVicker, he and his wife Theresa Oats will be honored with an "Outstanding Contribution to the Arts" award at the Morris Graves Museum's Celebration of the Arts Gala fundraiser on Saturday May 21. They are an outstanding pair and deserving of an award.
Here's hoping for perfect weather on Saturday May 7, along with the extended daylight, to make yours an enjoyable May Arts Alive!
Arts Arcata is coming up Friday May 13, which happens to be the night before Humboldt State's graduation weekend. On campus, the Reese Bullen Gallery in the Art Building continues the already running 2011 Juried Student Exhibition through Saturday May 14 so parents can see their kids' work.
Friday evening, Ironside Gallery on 9th Street opens a monthly member show featuring HSU graduates. You will also find art by younger students all around town: The Arcata Arts Institute has opening receptions at the Upstairs Gallery inside Umpqua Bank, Redwood Yogurt and Bon Boniere. A closing reception in HSU's Foyer Gallery, "The Collaborative Experience," pairs mixed media work by AAI students with work by their teachers.
Hunter Plaid Gallery in Sunnybrae has Words Don't Tell the Story with drawings/paintings by Jeff Hunter, the Hunter in Hunter Plaid. You'll also want to stop by Café Brio to see Claire Iris Schencke's fanciful watercolors. Susan Bornstein's acrylics on paper are at the Northcoast Environmental Center, including some lovely florals. Bornstein says her work is based on what she sees in her neighborhood: "the gardens and yards of friends ... unexpected combinations of colors, textures and shapes. To me the artist's role is to notice, to take the time to see, to feel and to respond."
Arts! Arcata takes place the night before the second annual Humboldt Arts Festival, which brings art and music to the streets of Arcata over the weekend with more than one stage, a sculpture garden, and art galore in all media. Because many businesses will have Hum Arts Fest exhibits, it will also take over a large portion of Friday's Arts! Arcata. Art in the streets! Yes! We need more of that. Kudos to Victor Hernandez for spearheading this enterprising event.
