Learn about the flying squirrels of North America and why this new species has recently emerged. The Humboldt’s is smaller and genetically different from its cousin, the northern flying squirrel even though their ranges overlap. It was recently discovered by mammalogist Brian Arbogast and his team. This species resides in the Pacific Northwest and was named after explorer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt. The HSU Natural History Museum located at 1242 G. St in Arcata is having a free evening lecture titled "American Flying Squirrels: A brief history and introduction to the newly-discovered Humboldt's Flying Squirrel" presented by evolutionary biologist Nick Kerhoulas Saturday, September 21st beginning at 7 p.m. Donations are appreciated. For more information call 707-826-4479 or go to www.humboldt.edu/natmus.
