As usual in American culture we not only blame individuals too readily for their afflictions, we also leave it to individuals to do the work of a community. Betty, like any human, has her preferences and weaknesses and those have a dramatic impact on the people in need but should not. If Betty likes you, if you are male, whatever - then you have some help BUT if she isn't in the right mood that day or you are not her cup of tea then you are shut off from resources - that is not the foundation of an healthy community, it is a dictatorship no matter often a benevolent one.
Betty has done great work AND it is not healthy to have one person deciding the fate of so many vulnerable and needy people.
Too comfortable? Right cause those shipping containers on asphalt must be so cozy. Oh wait those are the luxury accommodations. How the hell are they supposed to recover from homelessness and whatever landed them there when they are being outted by daybreak?! And rotated every 30 days? Even if they are ready and able to work how the hell are they supposed to even look for work living like that? They are not all just bohemian youth and habitual hobos. Sick system and the community pays with more mental health problems, more litter, more crime...we've earned it.
I am not against police AND I am against giving them too much power and demanding they deal with a responsibility that we as a community are not handling. Waving hands and shouting is not disturbing the peace any more than many other things that are NOT illegal. In some cultures people more openly express emotions rather than devour pharmaceutical mood modifiers as we do in the US. The guy likely has reasons to be upset. Let him be...unless he was making threats of violence and there is zero mention of what he was even saying.
I witnessed a police officer being demeaning and berating a homeless man in a wheel chair...the officer had been called by a business owner who was upset that the man had used a tree for a bathroom..peeing on it. The officer was angry and pointlessly snide and directly mean for no apparent purpose other than venting his own frustration. He just added more anguish to the homeless man's already terrible existence. Likewise the guy in the wheel chair was compliant and likely frustrated (and had mental and/or drug issues) as the rare public bathroom was closed for remodeling at Ramones. When people pee in public spaces it is gross and the smell only gets worse over time AND there are empty buildings all over and people with no where to live or relieve themselves. Business owners seem to feel entitled to use police as social workers but we don't support our government's revenue streams by demanding wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share of taxes and so our social services have no funding and the results lay on the side walks or worse living an awful life and burn out cops and business owners.
Re: “Prove Them Wrong”
And where are the statistic coming from regarding how many from the containers have been housed? There have been conflicting reports in the community that those stats of 40+% are from numerous agencies, not Betty's containers. Again, not Betty's fault but the community's for leaving so much to one person. We don't need another hero we need systemic consistent non denominational, transparent systems of support - in addition to Betty's amazing work.
