Heads up, Humboldt:
While the county's masking mandate has been lifted, Public Health is still strongly recommending masking indoors in public, social distancing and "avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces." COVID-19 is still with us, so be sure to check the protocols at event venues.

Marine Protected Area Watch Training

When: Tue., June 5, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. 2018
Phone: 677-2501
MPA Watch is a community-based science initiative that uses citizen volunteers to collect data on human use of coastal and marine resources in and around MPAs all along the California coast. The training teaches volunteers how marine protected areas (MPAs) were created, their locations, regulations governing them, and identification of common human uses. Once trained, MPA Watch volunteers monitor all human uses in marine protected areas, including coastal recreation, surfing, swimming, fishing, boating, diving and tidepooling through 15-minute surveys. So far, volunteers have conducted some 196,600 such surveys of how people use these protected areas. Survey data helps inform managers, law enforcement and scientists about use of California's marine protected areas, and permits tracking of public activities. For more information about the training, call (707) 677-2501 or email
