Lolita: Slave to Entertainment

When: Mon., April 3, 6 p.m. 2017
Price: Free
The documentary educates viewers on the story of a captive killer whale named Lolita from her capture in 1970 to her life in captivity in a tank that is illegally sized, along with a growing movement to retire her to a seaside sanctuary and a potential release to her Southern Resident family. It discusses the ethics of keeping marine mammals in captivity, which is becoming an increasingly controversial issue in the scientific and political communities. It would be beneficial to students to learn about this issue more and discuss it in an open and respectful environment. Free food and beverages. The director and filmmaker will be present at the event for a discussion and Q/A after the screening of the film.
