Re: “Draft Housing Element Calls for Drastic Solutions to Humboldt's Housing 'Crisis'

There are lots of legitimate tools and methods to encourage development of low and moderate income housing and the previous commenter has pointed out several. Some are more and less effective than others and only a few have been tried locally. The concept being proposed of putting the Planning Department or a new iteration of Planning in charge of actually building something is beyond laughable. While there are definitely notable exceptions within the department of individuals who show great competence and skill, generally the Planning Department isn't competent to run a food truck much less build affordable housing. These are the same people who have botched our general plan, every housing element for at least 20 years, ignored federal ADA requirements and lost over 90% of the lawsuits filed against them. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Government generally wisely stays well away from construction and that particularly applies in the case of Humboldt. Only a fool would stray down that path.

Re: “Better Together

"And we as a larger community are going to have to come to grips with the fact that developing more housing is going to require some compromise residents and elected officials recognizing that we may all have to swallow some neighborhood impacts in order to ensure that everyone has an affordable place to call home."

Won't happen. Not in Humboldt County.

Re: “'Overlooked'

Peter Childs is a greater environmentalist and more important a better human than Scott Graeson will ever be, One need look no further than their personal lives to see who is f'd up and who has the respect and admiration of multiple generations of knowledgeable and enlightened North Coast residents to know whose life has had value. Thank you Peter for all you have done for the betterment of us all. Your comments are, as usual well thought and well said. Our children could not have a better role model in their personal and professional lives than Perter Childs.

Re: “Seeking Settlement

This is just the latest example in a very long list of inappropriate actions from within the County Counsels office. Unethical behavior and blatant undermining of the legitimate public process occurs with unnerving regularity and is a disservice not only to the public but to the many employees in that office who actually do their jobs well. It is my very firm belief that County Counsel Blanck is of the highest integrity and honesty as an individual but he is without the support and direction he needs to make much needed staff changes. Responsibility for the illegal and unethical actions of staff ultimately rests with the Board of Supervisors and unfortunately there is only a minority of members in that body who possess the actual backbone to hold staff accountable. Without a vote of three we will continue to see these kinds of cases over and over again. Further we will see much needed tax dollars wasted on many more lawsuits in the future. Regrettably, I too have been forced to file suit several times to "encourage" our Board to follow the most obvious of laws and act on the most egregious of staff misdeeds. I took this extreme action only after literally begging our Supervisors to please simply do the right and responsible thing in the first place. Each time the County has lost it's case proving the errors and misjudgments over and over again. One Supervisor even went so far as to suggest that the County increase it's insurance to cover it's many legal losses. While simply paying out more taxpayer dollars to cover one's mistakes is one alternative perhaps simply following the law and not losing so many lawsuits in the first place might be the more prudent alternative. We can all only hope for more maturity in the future. Unfortunately the courts are the only recourse available to the public when their elected officials fail to take the actions they were elected to fulfill. I suggest letting your Supervisor know in no uncertain terms that you as a taxpayer and voter hold them personally responsible for the reckless actions of the people who work for them.
