Re: “A Monumental Decision

William McKinley fought in the civil war to end slavery and later spoke against war. Do Arcatians really know anything about this man and the 1890s, or just that he was white, male, and President?

"McKinley regarded the destruction of slavery as one of the war's vital outcomes, so as...Ohio governor he labored on behalf of the rights of the freepeople, including black suffrage." -from: Major McKinley: William McKinley and the Civil War. By William H. Armstrong. (Kent, Ohio: Kent State University Press, 2000. Pp. xvi, 191)

McKinley said: "We want no wars of conquest; we must avoid the temptation of territorial aggression." https://tinyurl.com/yacuw892

Re: “The General Concerns

Thank you for your reasoned view Marcy.

For the complainers:
North good, ugg, South bad...

Was the North good when civilian war protesters were slaughtered in New York by firing artillery into the crowds? Were they protesters or rioters?

History, or for that matter present politics, is complicated and not so black and white as pension earning politically correct government school admin. and our local social justice warriors would prefer.

Humboldt, tear town that statue of President McKinley!!!, a Civil War Union veteran who served all 4 years rising from private to major! His first presidential vote was even for Lincoln, but but remove that statue!

Re: “Land of the Free and Uncomfortable

A California University journalism mass communication professor in a bubble? Out of touch with mid-western and southern states? Wonders never cease.

Re: “Under the Color of Authority

"Mills has no...dog in the fight". Quite right. Mills was hired by a conservative city council and promptly attended prayer meetings. A liberal city council is elected and he organizes Martin Luther King marches no longer attending conservative prayer meetings. Mills is a political appointee, who serves at the pleasure of the city manager and council. He will do their bidding saying whatever is in the city's perceived current interests. The "Old Guard" instigators of Sergeant Laird's questionable and unprecedented persecution were also apparently quickly "retired". The only victims here appear to be the Sergeant and the taxpayer.

Re: “Is This Criminal Assault?

No. If that is excessive force on a resisting gangbanger who's hands are out of sight and could still be armed, every cop on the force would be out of a job. Wasn't a 14 year old just arrested for having a gun, shooting someone, and robbing people?

Re: “44

The suspect has been charged with attempted car jacking, carrying a stolen firearm, assault with a firearm. Sounds like someone who needed to be stopped before he hurt or killed someone. Glad he's in jail.
