Ryan was Poet Laureate from 2008-10. She has been awarded a MacArthur “Genius” Award, a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Guggenheim fellowship, the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize and four Pushcart Prizes. Ryan’s collection, The Best of It: New and Selected Poems, was awarded the National Book Critics Circle Award in 2010, as well as the Pulitzer Prize.
