Re: “Stay Classy, Big Red

First of all, so the woman left the seat up? Perhaps the woman was ill.

And if not, she may have been a transgender woman. I am a transgender woman. While I find Rollin Trehearne's comment offensive, reprehensible, and decidedly transphobic as it stands, I also see it as a show of ignorance about transgender people.

Comments like the one made by Rollin Trehearne perpetuate a negative image of transgender individuals and the transgender community as a whole. We (transgender individuals), like Rollin Trehearne at Big Red and his wife, want to simply live our lives. This includes working, loving our families, having lunch with family or friends, and yes, using the gender appropriate bathroom. In peace.

Sadly, we find ourselves the object of ridicule, discrimination, violence and murder.

A transgender individual is 16 times more likely to be murdered than the general population. Simply for being who we are.

A recent survey of the economic health of the transgender community in California was conducted by the Transgender Law Center. The resulting statistics are appalling.

Transgender individuals have an unemployment rate that is twice the stare rate, yet are twice as likely to have a college degree. Almost one-quarter of the transgender community reports having utilized the street economy (e.g. survival sex work). Almost half of the respondents report loss of employment and workplace discrimination. Basic health care is often denied by insurance companies (for those that are lucky enough to have insurance).

More information can be found at the Transgender Law Center web site:

http://www.transgenderlawcenter.org/

Again, the woman in question may or may not have been transgender. Regardless of this fact, why should anyone be denied use of a restroom based on the way they look or dress? It seems to me that the woman mentioned used the restroom and left. Just like Rollin Trehearne's wife. Just like anyone else.

So what's the problem Mr. & Mrs Trehearne?
