Re: “The Vicious Circle of Malaria

Barry Evans should have no reason to be so glum about malaria control. Helen Epstein's review in Harpers never stated that most funding for malaria control is lost to corruption. That is nonsense. Through an amazing global effort, 290 million bed nets with insecticide have been distributed in sub-Saharn Africa in the past three years, protecting three quarters of the people at risk for malaria. Also, new and effective medicines are now saving the lives of most of those with malaria who gets them. As a result, the number of malaria deaths in parts of Africa has fallen by half or more in only a few years. Malaria will not be eradicated throughout the world anytime soon, but malaria deaths may be almost gone by the end of this decade, thanks to U.S. efforts and those of the Global Fund.
