Dixon Steele, a down-on-his-luck screenwriter with a history of violent behavior, becomes the prime suspect when a hat-check girl is found murdered. However, Steele's attractive neighbor Laurel Gray provides him with a false alibi, and they soon begin a romance -- in spite of her lingering concerns that the troubled, violent Steele might just be a killer after all. Starring Humphrey Bogart and Gloria Grahame. Directed by Nicholas Ray. A brief introduction will precede the movie, and a discussion will follow. Hosted by Michael Cooley. (1950 / b&w / 94 min.)
