Humboldt Rose Society

When: Thu., April 14, 7 p.m. 2016
Price: Free
The Humboldt Rose Society meets most second Thursdays of the month at Christ Episcopal Church, 15th and H Streets, Eureka, at 7 p.m. This month's (April) meeting is on the 14th. The group is so pleased to have Jolene Adams, 54th President of the American Rose Society, now serving as the Immediate Past President, as guest presenter. Jolene has also served as Webmaster for the World Federation of Rose Societies and for the ARS, along with starting web pages for several districts and local societies. She serves the World Federation as a Vice President for North America, representing the three countries in North America who are Members of the WFRS - Canada, USA, and Bermuda. She is an ARS Consulting and Master Rosarian, ARS and International Horticulture Judge, also a California Master Gardener. She retired from her position as Computer Resources Manager at UC Berkeley in 2000. In her small garden in the S.F. Bay area Jolene grows about 150 roses of all types - Climbers, Old Garden Roses, Minis and Minifloras, Hybrid Teas, Grandifloras, Floribundas, Polyanthas, Austins, Romanticas, Modern and Classic Shrubs. If you've ever even thought about rose classifications, that covers almost all them all. She fell in love with roses as a teenager and hasn't gotten over it. Her program on the 14th will be on Garden Safety, with emphasis on the dangers and regulations on using pesticides and fungicides, including how to read the labels on products sold for use in the garden. She will also bring us up to date on the status of roses in the US and answer questions about gardens in general. Any interested members of the community are welcome to attend. There is no fee. A short business meeting will cover some necessary preparations for the coming May 7 Plant Sale (near the Sequoia Zoo) and June 12 Rose Show at Redwood Acres. A door prize is usually awarded, and refreshments are provided. For questions about the program or society, call (707) 826-0716.
