Writer, historian and ethnogeographer Jerry Rohde presents"Saving Saving the Redwoods: How Part of the Humboldt Forest Was Preserved" at the Humboldt County Historical Society program meeting in the first-floor conference room of the Humboldt County Library. In 1918 a collection of patrician preservations formed the Save-the-Redwoods League. The group intended to protect a part of the rapidly diminishing redwood forest that ran close to the northern California coast. They were joined over the next few years by a host of other tree lovers, from the senior class at Eureka High to the Humboldt Women’s Save-the-Redwoods League. Soon a string of old-growth-filled parks lined the Redwood Highway, protecting thousands of acres of giant trees in perpetuity. To celebrate the centennial of what is now called the Save the Redwoods League, and the League’s Centennial Celebration week, through October 13, we’ll look at some of the pristine places and pivotal events that were part of the movement’s early history. We’ll learn how a trio of timely telegrams helped save the world’s most famous grove of redwoods. We’ll see how a pair of floods caused an entire town to become part of a state redwood park. And we’ll look at some of the most striking scenery to be found anywhere—the still-surviving Humboldt redwood forest. It should be a tree-mendous event. Join Jerry Rohde for "Saving the Redwoods: How Part of the Humboldt Forest Was Preserved."
