Local Historian and HSU Alumnus Sean Mitchell presents “Fire in the Mountain: The Beginning of the End of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad,” the story of the 1978 Island Mountain Tunnel Fire. Twenty-five miles east of Garberville, and deep in the Eel River Canyon, the fire was a turning point for our Northwestern Pacific Railroad. The 4,314-foot tunnel caught fire in September of 1978, causing more than 1500 feet of this vital link to collapse.
