Being slapped as a child by a parent hardly constitues child abuse in my opinion, most of us in that generation were displined with physical punishment. I was spanked with a belt just like every other kid I knew, so what? Painting Jean Hawkins as a bully does not compute for me; a young women left to raise three little boys alone has to instill some order & discipline. I've known her for many years, she is a friendly, sweet woman well-liked by all. She obviously had no idea about what Greg was doing & of course he would hide it from her. Greg clearly was mentally ill and hit a breaking point; but Jean can't be held responsible for that. Don't paint her as a monster; she is not. Maybe she was not aware of Greg abusing his brothers, maybe she made some parenting mistakes as all parents do, but she is certainly not an evil person. She was certainly on speaking terms with all the boys in the 90's.
