Tree-level productivity is largely determined by crown size and aboveground vigor, but light availability ultimately controls growth. The wide range of tree structures and light environments in multiage forests necessitates models that can account for the effects of tree structure and light availability on trunk growth. Our goals were to determine which measure of light best predicts trunk growth of Sequoia sempervirens, to quantify the amount of variation in growth explained by light after accounting for effects of tree structure, and to compare various competition indices. Whether forests are managed to optimize timber production, carbon sequestration, biodiversity, or some combination of these, the effects management has on size, aboveground vigor, and light availability of retained trees should be considered.
