Re: “Vexed by Vax 'Bias'

I agree with Barry. If lefties ever wonder how people can deny climate change, a few may find insight in their beliefs about vaccines. While some modern medicine is no better than placebo, and there is still much that cannot be cured, vaccines are pretty close to a miracle and have saved untold millions of people, mostly children, from serious illness, maiming and death. The use of vaccines wiped deadly and disfiguring smallpox from the face of the earth, a boggling feat, and is close to doing so with polio.

Re: “Westworld vs. Realworld

"I became acquainted with the last stage of that corruption in my second concentration camp, Auschwitz. The gas chambers of Auschwitz were the ultimate consequence of the theory that man is nothing but the product of heredity and environment; or as the Nazi liked to say, of Blood and Soil."

It's comforting to think that the mass exterminations of the Nazi regime are some uniquely horrible destination on a wrongful path from which we can turn back. Yet what I understand about early human societies and those of our nearest relations, chimpanzees, is that they are prone to make war on their neighbors and wipe them out where possible. Genocidal regimes are acting out the nastiest and most violent of human norms with the efficiency offered by modern technology. While their reach and power may be greater, their homicidal desires and their justifications are as old as 'Cain'. I don't think turning away from materialism and back to the bible will reduce violence, quite the contrary.

Re: “Hero Immerses, Big Sick Shines

Dear Filmland,
If you review Valerian, I would like to ask you please to call the film out on the weird sexist cliches it is chock full of. Not to mention its treatment of the POC sex slave character. *spoilers* Her stated motivation in life is to please the mens, and she is promptly disposed of by giving her life for white protagonists she just met. I would love to see this movie gender-swapped. I think it would be really illuminating. Instead, both leads captured by same aliens while leads are wearing high-tech combat suits that let them crash through walls. Male lead escapes and plot takes him to red light district and aforementioned sex slave, meanwhile female lead waits for rescue while being dressed in sexy dresses by aliens who only see her as food. Why? Why?

Re: “Self/Less Loses Itself

You may not be the target audience for Minions. My kids thought it was hilarious. :)

Re: “Trinidad Fish Festival Evolves to Keep from Floundering

I'm a little surprised you are confused Barry since the broader culture in this country also holds that there are situations where alcohol is inappropriate and further, casinos are not included in that number.
