Re: “Port of Call Eureka

Some thoughtful ideas in the comments, but some seem off the mark. Cruise ship passengers visit in daylight hours only, they will not be staying at motels or taking buses in the evening so these concerns are not relevant. My wife and I are cruisers with considerable experience, including a stop at Astoria, and I'd say there are two questions around which the success of the idea will revolve. First, those cruisers who take excursions will go to see or do what? Redwoods are a major draw, but after that, then what else. Usually there are 5 or 6 options for organized tours available at a stop. If we're courageous, a guided tour of a marijuana farm would be ground breaking, and interesting to tourists. Almost all cruisers I've talked to about marijuana favor it, but find it cutting edge to talk about. Winery tours? Second, those cruisers who do not take excursions, but just get off the ship to walk around, will go to see or do what? Most towns, including Astoria, provide a way to get from the cruise ship to the town's major shopping or cultural area. A free shuttle bus is often the simplest plan. Other than wandering around old town it's hard to quickly imagine what the cruisers will do. Possibly HSU or CR could organize some lectures? At first glance the problem with Eureka as a tourist stop is that it simply isn't one. Astoria really has the same problem. It will be interesting to see what aspects of Greater Eureka people can find ways to make entertaining or instructive.

Re: “'A Platform for a Cause'

Tony Serra is such an inspiration to lawyers, at least to lawyers like me. He is just amazing.

Re: “A Lesson for Progressives

"I do not belong to an organized political party. I am a Democrat" - Will Rogers.

True then, and true now. That's the story behind progressive inability to find a message and stay on it.

In other news, I'm sorry to say that I have a split decision to register regarding making campaign contributions. I contributed to two candidates. Boxer won, Rodoni lost. Upshot: contributions may help, but they may not.
