North American porcupine
ecology in a coastal dune forest
presented by Tim Bean and Cara Appel
Although porcupines seem to have all but disappeared from much of northern
coastal California, there’s a thriving population in Tolowa Dunes State Park, a
unique coastal dune forest on the edge of the continent. This past summer, Tim
and Cara started studying this enigmatic species to understand diet and move-
ment in different seasons. This talk covers their research to date. Tim received
support for this project in 2014 from the Zoo's conservation grant program.
