Specific topics at the Community Gardeners Gathering include Troubleshooting in the Garden, Starting and Sustaining a Community Garden, Integrated Pest Management in the Garden, Practical Use of Biodynamic Preparations and Soil Fertility, School Gardens and Youth Gardening Activities, CalFresh and Other Food Resources, Composting, Caring for Fruit Trees, and Growing a Network of Gardeners. The event includes lunch; if you are able to do so please bring a cold side dish to share.
Funding for the event and North Coast Community Garden Collaborative comes from the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services’ CalFresh Outreach Program.
The North Coast Community Garden Collaborative is a support network of and for community gardens and their supportive partners, working together to increase access to healthy, fresh, and culturally appropriate foods for all North Coast residents. To this end it aims to connect gardeners to each other and to resources in the community needed to sustain community gardens and increase the amount of food produced by gardeners for themselves, their families, and community members in need through donation to food pantries.
Redwood Community Action Agency (RCAA) serves as the North Coast Community Garden Collaborative’s fiscal agent, and RCAA’s Natural Resources Services division supplies office space for two part-time staff members. The North Coast Community Garden Collaborative offers free resources and services to community gardening projects including staff time to assist gardens with planning and accessing resources; a tool lending library; donated garden materials like compost and plant starts; a website promoting local gardens, community events, and links to useful sites and articles; a monthly newsletter; and networking opportunities like gatherings for gardeners.
