Champion Campions of Northwest California

When: Wed., Oct. 10, 7 p.m. 2018
The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) invites the public to "Champion Campions of Northwest California," by Dr. Michael Mesler, Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. at Six Rivers Masonic Lodge, 251 Bayside Road, near 7th and Union in Arcata. Dr. Mesler, plant taxonomist and pollination biologist at Humboldt State University, will show us the various forms of "campion" wildflowers found in our region, including the familiar bight red Indian Pink (Silene laciniata), and many others. The showiest flower of the group is the newly described stringflower (Silene nelsonii), often seen on wildflower hikes along the Trinity River South Fork. Conservation of these colorful plants depends on which ones are separate species or just varieties of the same species. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. for snacks, sales, and socializing. The North Coast Chapter of CNPS offers free public programs on the second Wednesday of each month, September through May. 707-822-2015,
