Re: “Eureka City Council

Come and watch Eureka locals piss and moan about the homeless and get policies and ordinances passed that punish the poorest most vulnerable men, women and children.

Re: “G Street Squat

In Eureka, it's the blind leading the blind...A chain of bigoted fools.

Decades of developer/speculator control of local government has insured that the tools that get affordable and SRO housing constructed never see the light of day.

The solution is the same for homelessness.

It's cheaper to build tiny apartment complexes for the low-income and the homeless than to have $150/hour police, fire, emergency-room personnel, mental health professionals, drug rehab facilities, jail and juvenile hall to inefficiently and ineffectively micromanage destitute individuals and families. It's idiotic to chase them from one disastrous tenement, makeshift camp, or sidewalk, to another.

Put a Gorilla in a poorly maintained cage and the zoo-keepers get feces thrown at them.

Re: “Three Years On, The Edge Tries to Stay Sharp

During the last Depression, officials in every profession were pressured to stifle compelling reports of human suffering. Public dissent was repressed and many Americans escaping the Dust Bowl were stopped from entering California by the Highway Patrol.

Despite Humboldt County's five newspapers, none bothered to report how many local families are still being bankrupted and foreclosed in record numbers since the 2008 collapse, the largest collapse since the 1930's. According to an article in the "Humboldt Edge", not one local journalist has reported on this county's "Trends Report" documenting horrific statistics in every measurable human condition.

The written word remains powerful and powerful forces remain allied against it.

Re: “Appeals Court Reinstates Lawsuit in Fatal Fortuna Police Shooting

We pay police plenty to act professionally.

Unfortunately, a horrible economy has seen a flood of police cadets that are terrified and poorly trained but will do whatever it takes to support their family with one of the best retirement packages in the nation for public employees.

Re: “Smarten Up

"Smarten Up"???

Coming from a journalism "professional" that has written too many editorials on elections without one word about the biggest sad.

I wonder if more than 10% of HSU students would vote if they knew that Australia passed universal healthcare after that nation initiated a monetary penalty for "failing to vote"?

Of all the local and national media I watched, Only Amy Goodman's "Democracy Now" reported that 80% of potential U.S.voters abstained in the 2016 presidential primaries.

Do better Marcy.

Much better!

Re: “Let's Talk About It: Finding Common Concerns

"We should recognize the importance of sitting down across political, ethnic, gender, educational and other perspectives and simply talking to each other to explain what our priorities are, and how we justify them. We simply need to understand each other, and to see if we have any common concerns that we can work together to address." (Rollin Richmond).

Please name one historic, successful social justice struggle where that worked.

Richmond illustrates the same old claptrap that inspired HSU visiting lecturer Ralph Nader to congratulate all HSU graduates in their achievement of a degree in "harmony ideology".

Re: “Let's Talk About It: Choosing Civility

When a terrified EPD officer fires 4 shots into a home occupied by 3 toddlers, and 3 more killing a 22 year old in his front yard, should we tolerate deadly, costly incompetence?

Should all residents start being mindful following Humboldt County's first civil trial in its new federal courthouse being another EPD fatal shooting?

Re: “Humboldt After Trump

Mr. Trachtenberg took over management of a hugely popular blog forum called "Humboldt Herald" turning it into his personal playground of satire and insult. After he began censoring submissions he didn't like, participation vanished.

Not exactly "dialogue" material.
