The M 7.2 Cape Mendocino earthquake of April 25, 1992 and its M6.6 and 6.7 aftershocks caused over $60 million in losses and is the only Humboldt County earthquake to be gain a FEMA major disaster declaration. This talk recounts what happened in 1992 and how that earthquake led to the establishment of the US National Hazard Mitigation Program and raised awareness of the Cascadia subduction zone.
