Heads up, Humboldt:
While the county's masking mandate has been lifted, Public Health is still strongly recommending masking indoors in public, social distancing and "avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces."
COVID-19 is still with us, so be sure to check the protocols at event venues.
The California Native Plant Society (CNPS) invites the public to "Burning the
Bald Hills: Managing Savanna and Woodland Ecosystems in Redwood National Park,"
with Eamon Engber, Interagency Fire Ecologist.
A problem 100 years in the making, the suppression of fires in what is now
Redwood National Park has caused park ecologists to undertake active management
strategies to bring about positive changes for native plants and animals. The
audience will learn about oak woodland and serpentine ecosystems, and the fire
and non-fire alternatives used in those systems to achieve renewed native
biodiversity. Issues the park is addressing include native conifer encroachment,
small-tree mortality, and the understory response to the treatments. Engber will
also explain the proposed vegetation management projects in the Little Bald
Hills serpentine pine savanna.
Doors open at 7 p.m. for refreshments, socializing, book signing and sales.
