Re: “Whose Arcata?

In response to “Caring but Cautious”: As the Sales and Marketing Manager for Cypress Grove I have some comments and suggestions. I have grown weary of the continued portrayal of Cypress Grove Chevre as a cog in a global, goliath corporation that should not be trusted. Hearing this depiction during our effort to develop the Giladorni property in Arcata was not completely unexpected since it was just one part of the concentrated campaign to disseminate misinformation about our company. The true nature of our relationship with Emmi, our new owners, and our long record as a productive and caring member of this community eclipses these attempts to suddenly depict us as some scourge unleashed on Arcata. Emmi is majority owned by small, farmer’s co-ops with a basic value system akin to ours. We are what is referred to as an IOC or Independent Operating Company, and Emmi has instructed Cypress Grove to continue to operate in exactly the same manner as we have for the first 28 years of our existence. Their only participation in our efforts to develop a new goat dairy is to fund it, as well as an addition to our creamery to the tune of $10 million or so, expenditures which would not have been possible for the formerly locally owned Cypress Grove, which by the way, was also a corporation. That being said, one of the main reasons I’m responding to your comment is amazement at your statement that you have not seen “any community involvement” since we (Cypress Grove) has been here. Really? Nothing? Based on what? Please, call CASA and ask them about the number of cheese and monetary donations they’ve received, along with donations of employee’s time serving cheese at fund raising functions. Call the North Coast Children’s Services and ask them if they appreciated the 1% of our profits that we donated to them over the last several years. Check in with the Arcata Rotary and inquire about the Cypress Grove employees who have opened their homes to cook donated cheese and wine dinners used for auctions focused on building a new fire department in Arcata. Other beneficiaries of our time and cheese donations have been The Clark Historical Museum, North Coast Co-op, Dairy Doe Replacement (FFA and 4-H), Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Food 4 People, multiple HSU events, Miranda’s Rescue, Women’s Entrepreneurs Institute, and Humboldt Made to name but a very few. Had you thought to do a little research before writing this ludicrous comment, a quick search on our web site would have armed you with some actual information. If I sound mad, it’s because I am. In just two sentences, you have spread patent untruths and insulted a company and a group of people I care a lot about.
