Re: “Fit to serve?

This is not the first time there has been conflicted leadership on the commission. In the '90's another head of this commission selectively protected his brother who ran the ice plant from inspections. That building had a long history ( see Marcy Burstiner's journalism class project featured on the cover of NCJ) of ammonia leaks and improper disposal, including pouring directly into the bay. When the filthy building was shut down it collapsed because all that held it together was 2 feet of ice. An accident could have resulted in a mile radius death zone for most of old town. There is a culture here in Humboldt that has not yet evolved to a deeper understanding of ecology and integrity and they continue to show up in important places of our government. Perjury should not be something Newman can plea out of, especially given his role as commissioner of a bay system of such importance and his position as head of the Fisherman's Marketing Assn. I'm disappointed that Mike Wilson is willing to let it pass. Mike is one of the smartest and honest people to serve in any capacity of Humboldt government. I now ask Patrick Higgins to forward a motion for the dismissal of Aaron Newman.

Re: “Locals

Thank you for writing these important perspectives about So. Hum shadows. I have tried to get the sociology department at H.S.U. to consider adding Drug War Post Traumatic Stress and it's impacts on the marijuana counter-culture as an important subject of study. As a mostly white middle class, educated, progressive and financially stable group of activists and artists the Humboldt experiment was able to finance and forward its many goals in the arts, politics and the environment. No good deed goes unpunished. The Drug War was just a Co-Intel Program to kill it off. Like A.I.M. and the Black Panthers we got too influential and had to be stopped. Viewed this way it is easy to understand what happened and where the blame should be placed for the failure of our values to be seen in the third generation.
