Heads up, Humboldt:
While the county's masking mandate has been lifted, Public Health is still strongly recommending masking indoors in public, social distancing and "avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces." COVID-19 is still with us, so be sure to check the protocols at event venues.

Adult Book Group: The Last Stand by David Harris

When: Thu., Aug. 22, 6-7 p.m. 2019
Phone: 707-822-5954

The Last Stand is an arresting, first-rate reportage from the deep woods. Harris gives a mesmerizing, blow-by-blow account of Pacific Lumber's hostile takeover by Charles Hurwitz, and the ecological battles it triggered. He describes sleepy Scotia, the pride of Pacific Lumber and its owners, the Murphy family, and how the company took care of its own (educating children and caring for the sick), practicing sustainable yield and selective cutting until Texan Hurwitz, a corporate raider, whose favorite saying was, "Those who have the gold, rule," took over Pacific Lumber and clear-cut old growth to pay off his junk bond debt.
