My Great Great Grandmother was Ellen Sutherland. She was a Coastal Wailaki (Sinkyone). Her family was massacred at Needle Rock, north of Usal State Beach. She survived because she was stolen as a child and sold as a slave. Her sister Sally Bell was one of only a few survivors of the massacre at Needle Rock. I am here because my Great Great Grandmother was stolen and sold as a slave. Sally Bells ancestors are here because she hid in a redwood stump. These are the stories I learned as a child, and now I tell my own children. I am lucky to be here. My story isn't unusual for California Indians.
