Re: “As Cannabis Markets Lurch, Some Humboldt Towns Are Rising, Others Falling

The lower decrease in Eureka indicates that people who normally shopped closer to home are going to the cheaper retailers in Eureka.. That trend will continue, I suspect.. Higher end retailers and restaurants will suffer as will communities with lower percentages of wage paying jobs and professionals who are still potential customers.. One of the largest businesses in Garberville has diversified by purchasing two hardware stores in Oregon.. Others may be considering moving to the more prosperous counties south of us.. The non-profits are going to take a big hit unless they plan carefully.. No sign of that.. Add to all this, the County's "gimme gimme" tax policies and decline becomes inevitable..

Re: “Dark of Night Edits to a Sungrown Ordinance

I'm not seeing the real economics of legalization of the pot industry addressed.. Dispensaries and their high prices will no longer exist.. Corporations will have no interest in farming up a dirt road.. Huge commercial grows will be the wave of the future and they will grow excellent pot, perhaps some organic.. Folks who sold their land to big, outside growers will find them gone away to use their money more wisely.. If the owner carried the loan, their monthly payment will suddenly cease and they will be left with property which, though lovely, cannot produce income..Even at $400 a pound, the profit percentages will be extrfemely attractive to corporations.. It will take a few years but the results will mean disaster to the County, to non profits, to businesses and to many residents..

Re: “Dogs Dosed By Junkie Poop? Naaaah. Well, Maybe.

My tenant's dog ate a marijuana brownie… She ran off and hid in the woods for 3 days… When she did come back she was a different animal, fearful and jumpy and she stayed that way for the rest of her life…

Re: “The Pitchfork and the Mouse

An excellent article, Linda… I think Garberville gets a bit of a bum rap from its own residents… I am in town nearly every day and I can't remember the last time I was panhandled… The various groups of trimmigrants are constantly changing as they actually get hired on a daily basis… The increased activity of the Sheriffs has noticeably reduced bum activity… If I were a tourist, I would find the dogs more of a problem than their owners…
The simple fact that Garberville sits right on 101 is a huge factor in all of this as is our reputation as a marijuana mecca… The Emergency Room at the Hospital takes a very heavy hit from alcoholism and drug problems and some of that may be our easy access from 101… These problems are happening everywhere and we need to learn from other communities what has worked for them and let them know how projects like trash cleanup is working so well for us...
