Re: “Why Your Vote Matters

Thank you for informing readers about the importance of voting. The reporter who interviewed me about the project to stabilize the banks of the Mad River many years ago accurately quoted me. However, just to make sure there's no confusion, I also told her that, in my opinion, it made good sense for the county to pursue the project and armor the bluffs.

Doing so helped save several homes and ultimately protected county and MCSD assets from future erosion. That's a good thing.

But it's also important for people to understand that when they own riverside or oceanfront properties, and Mother Nature unleashes the power of erosion, they're not necessarily entitled to taxpayer-funded intervention to save their private properties. Some residents of Big Lagoon learned this the hard way back in the late 1990s when their properties, and a house or two, crumbled into the sea.

These beautiful properties, with their spectacular views, come with risks. Buyer beware.
