Re: “Buddy Reed

If you love the Blues, and Blues Dancing, you'll love Buddy and his band. Also catch him at The Libation on Tuesday nights, and The Speakeasy in Eureka on late Saturday nights.

Re: “Bay Battle

The current Harbor Commission has done a commendable job on the more upbeat and less controversial tasks of promoting recreation and conservation around the bay, for which we thank them. But this same team has clearly and I believe consciously done an inadequate job of attending to its duties as they relate to commercial use of the harbor, which is our shared natural resource.
This is not about personalities, it's about priorities, and our local economy needs good stewardship, too. I strongly support, and I encourage you to vote for, highly qualified and motivated candidates Susan Rotwein and Nick Angeloff for harbor commissioner.

Re: “The Mystery of the Modest Endorsement

Fair question. I recently visited NY, NJ and PA on an 8 day trip, driving and walking through a dozen or more small towns in rural, not urban, areas. I saw not one -- not one -- "homeless", vagrant, panhandler, street bum, shopping cart, cardboard sign, intoxicated or filthy camper. It doesn't have to be this way. Eureka has, sadly and regrettably, gotten used to the proliferation of undesirables, encourages them, and even makes a living off them, as landlords of DHHS tennants, or as government employees tending to the problems they create. It is irresponsible to shrug the problem off as unsolvable and blame it on our nice climate or our big hearts. And if you haven't heard a tourist exclaim in disgust about the homeless infection that we tolerate, then you haven't been listening.

Re: “The Mystery of the Modest Endorsement

Homelessness, vagrancy, panhandling, graffiti, and rampant drug abuse. I hear the Eureka Chamber of Commerce may print promotional bumper stickers that say:
Visit Eureka Once!

Re: “Playing Chicken

Before there was The Colonel, there was Fried Chicken. Back East, it was often called Southern Fried Chicken, and was often offered on the menu as Chicken-In-A-Basket, on a bed of French Fries.

Re: “Policing the Police

Is Humboldt County stuck in the '60's?
Interesting article in the WSJ relating to effective police response.
Excerpt:
"... in the '60's and '70's... Reformers focused on the rights of defendants, remaining blind to the ravages of under-enforcement."
