Re: “Dishing it Out

When I was in high school, and later when I attended HSU, I worked at several food establishments, but always in the back. In high school, I washed dishes, but the chefs took a liking to me and allowed me to help with prep work- it turned out that I was pretty handy with a knife. Over the years, I managed to do okay in the back of the house, but one day both of the scheduled waitresses called in "sick"; it was a picturesque early fall day, so I'm sure that the doc that they were visiting was on a river somewhere. As I was the only person available, I was enlisted to be the wait staff for that evening. I tried to convince the owner of the establishment that this was a terrible idea, but there weren't any other options. Fast forward 2 hours: I informed a customer who was barking orders at me that she "could go F#

Re: “Letting the Days Go By

I like your column. A lot. I moved to Humboldt when I was 15; I came from the south, and brought my accent with me. I was the kid who talked funny and had the long hair. It wasn't an easy place to move to, as is the case with many other small towns I reckon, but by the time I graduated from EHS, Eureka felt like home. I was involved in the local music community (which it was-and hopefully still is), primarily in an all original band called Radio Sex, but played in a couple different bands throughout my time up there. I was lucky to be in an area with so many amazing musicians, and even more fortunate to be able to play with many of them. Your column takes me back to that time, and I'd like to thank you for that. Today's column took me right out to Trinity Lake; it wasn't gangsta rap back then, but it was DEFINITELY the same dude: tank top, flip flops and either Vaurnet's or Ray-Bans...thanks for the stroll...

Re: “Meet Dan Johnson

Oh, and one other thing: what the hell is someone who OBVIOUSLY doesn't care one iota about education doing on the Arcata School Board? Someone who fulfilled his educational destiny by dropping out of Shasta JC...who lost TWO elections and only won when running unopposed? I don't know much, but it seems to me that the kids in Arcata DESERVE BETTER THAN THAT.

Re: “Meet Dan Johnson

Nice puff piece...obviously written by someone who's not one of those "lefties who resent success"...maybe the author's looking for a PR position with a local construction company?
