Re: “Why I'm Pulling My Support from KHSU After 25 Years

Thank you, Alan Sanborn, for this well written column. Katie Whiteside has been the heart of KHSU for more than two decades. She has always welcomed and encouraged community participation in public radio. To be fired by the General Manager, Peter Fretwell, is a slap in the face of the public. Like the canary in the coal mine, if the public does not stand up and resist this insult, it will find its radio station becoming more and more just a mouthpiece of NPR, where Washington DC dictates what is public and what is important.

HSU may hold the broadcasting license, but by law, it is supposed to serve the listening public. When it disregards the local community, it loses its right to hold that license.

I hope the listeners of KHSU will speak loud and clear that the firing of Katie Whiteside is unacceptable and that Peter Fretwell needs to find a new job.

The 1902 map is available here...

Birds-eye-view maps were popular around the turn of the 19th Century.

Re: “A Monumental Decision

I would suggest melting the statue and recasting it in the likeness of Mark Twain, with an accompanying plaque about the whole story and quotes from Twains "Comments on the Moro Massacre" from 1906. And be sure to mention Bret Hartes experience in Arcata!
