Re: “'A Potential Tipping Point'

I would like to know from where the previous poster's facts come? Are you a medical person? Do you have any idea how dangerous is this nouvelle virus? Do you even know anything about the data on how this virus is transmitted? I would bet the answer is no, you do not know. Our U.S. population has been quarantined and refused entry from the rest of the world because of people like you who spread disinformation. Our virus numbers are going up locally and nationally. Healthcare workers are dying taking care of virus patients. How dare you put out such BS. I am tired of walking by young people who have no care for anyone but themselves and refuse to wear a mask in public places, even outside when social distancing is not possible. Get out of the Arcata Marsh. Many older people walk there for their exercises. Few to no young people are wearing masks. I was told by one of them that I could wear my mask if I was afraid. How dare you expose the rest of us by your uninformed behavior. This previous writer probably doesn't even live here, but is here to attend HSU. For the HSU students who are following the requirements, wearing masks, and self-quarantining for 2 weeks after arrival in Arcata, thank you. For the rest of you.....go back to where you came from. You are not welcome here unless you change your behavior and obtain some education about this dangerous nouvelle virus. You owe Dr.Frankovich an apology.

Re: “HSU Students Move Into On-Campus Housing Amid COVID-19 Concerns

I am a long time and frequent Arcata Marsh walker. For the past month I have seen a large increase in 20 something year olds walking there. None wear a mask. I was required to walk through a group of 3 of them on a narrow path, none with masks. One young lady was laughing and I heard her say to the group that she is from LA and here to go to HSU. When I stated they should be wearing masks when around others I was told I could wear one if I was afraid. So much for their commitment to social responsibility, health and safety. Words are cheap and 20 somethings apparently don’t believe the rules apply to them. My apologies to those among you who do follow the rules and wear masks and will self quarantine for 2 weeks. How about putting some pressure on your self-serving peers. Until everyone living in this community works together and follows the rules our Covid19 numbers in Humboldt County will continue to go up.

Re: “'Our Sovereign Right'

Our Sovereign Right, as stated by Garth Sundberg in the NCJ article of July 2nd, appears to say First Nations have the right to misuse resources on their lands as they see fit. In this case I am speaking of the contentious issue of water capacity in Trinidad. Is there enough water to support a large corporate hotel development on the Trinidad Rancheria? For Mr. Sundberg to call out the City of Trinidad, HARP, and County Supervisor Steve Madrone with the statement "....your biases, your prejudice and your discrimination is just as bad as what happened over 200 years ago and what is happening in our nation today" is self-serving and off the mark for the scientific data shows there is a water capacity problem in Trinidad. This statement does not fit with the known cultural and spiritual beliefs of First Nation Peoples, also known as the Water Protectors. The issue is not Sovereign Rights, rather it is about resource extraction, and how to bend the rules to allow for bigger profits. I watched as the rules were bent to move a Blue Lake school bus stop from a long time safe location, with new asphalt being laid, to move that school bus stop down the road, close to a 90 degree road curve and freeway underpass on Glendale Dr. This was done to accommodate a large indoor cannabis grow directly across the street from the original bus stop. I do not remember any request for public input. It just happened. I believe the property owner is Garth Sundberg, and it occurred during the time the 5th District Supervisor was Ryan Sundberg.
The answer to these types of issues is to always consider the common good. Water is life. And how water extraction and pollution will impact all who live in an area should be the number one consideration.

Re: “Column Quotes HumCo Nurse Tying Fatal COVID-19 Cases to Meth Dealer who Refused to Isolate

I am a long time nurse, working in Humboldt County for over 35 years. What I am seeing as I hike the local trails and shop for food is that many, particularly young people, do not wear masks. Today there was a large group of young men at Sequoia Park in Eureka. Only one had on a mask. A group of three twenty somethings were chatting in the middle of a narrow trail at the Arcata Marsh last week, requiring I walk through them. None had on a mask. When I politely said to them, "you should be wearing masks when around other people" one of them told me I could wear my mask if I was afraid of catching something. One of the young ladies was laughing and stating she was from L.A. and here to attend HSU this fall.
The young believe they are invincible and pesky mask rules do not apply to them. If you are young and are not wearing a mask when out in public, then you are contributing to the increasing spread of Corona virus in Humboldt County. And to the joggers who run by me without a mask on their face, your breath is coming from the bottom of your lungs and you are forcefully spraying your droplets for a long distance. Why do you think that is ok? Help stop the growing numbers of Covid 19 cases in Humboldt County. Wear a mask. Front line healthcare workers are putting their lives and their families at risk to take care of you when you become sick and require medical care. Just WEAR A MASK.

Re: “Public Health Confirms Three New COVID-19 Cases, Making 16 This Week

I am a long time local who uses the Arcata Marsh for walking. There I am finding daily those people who do not extend Covid safety rules to others, thinking only of themselves. Recently I came upon three early twenties young folks standing across the whole trail having a lively conversation, including laughing. None were wearing masks. It was necessary for me to walk through this group, for they just stood in place. I heard one state "I'm from L.A. and here to attend HSU." When I asked "Why are you not wearing a mask when other people are around you?" The young man stated, "You can wear your mask if you want to be safe." He was confused by my response, "And who are you thinking of when you act this way?" I also frequently encounter joggers without masks at the Arcata Marsh. The majority of them just pull up their shirts over their noses only at the point of passing me. Joggers exhale powerfully from deep in their lungs. What's wrong with this picture? I say if you jog, wear a mask. And if you are within 6 feet of another person, 20 feet would be better, put on a mask or bandana. The beauty and peace of the Arcata Marsh is for the enjoyment of everyone. And I enjoy that I do not need to be wearing a mask most of the time. However, I do pull up my bandana to cover my mouth and nose if I am within 20 feet of another person. It isn't difficult, it isn't rocket science. Be someone who cares about humanity, and the environment in which we all live. This is truly a global pandemic, called as such for a good reason.

Re: “'Hook, Line and Turbine'

Mr. King is exactly right on. A big corporation in financial difficulty hoping to make use of tax credits to bolster their credit problems. To hell with the environment and this local area. And do not even consider the Wiyot Tribe and the sanctity of a sacred site, nor the birds and animals that will be impacted. No mention made of the California Condors that will be introduced to this area. This is a bad idea all around. Speak up Humboldt or you will see this happen. And shame on the politicians who are endorsing bringing a distant corporation into Humboldt County to make profits off of the beauty and resources of the North Coast.
