Re: “Drug Money

Sheriff Downey has current Sheriff deputies and others within the Humboldt County administration that took pay offs for years from growers. Seen it with my own two eyes. Like the current Coroner Ernie Stewart who took pay offs when he lived out by Honeydew from local growers. Why don't you ask the good Sheriff about his late good pal CPA Jimmy Eddy in Garberville, who cooked the books and made many in SoHum rich by hiding illegal drug profits. Or my personal witness to Sheriff's deputies loading small planes full of confiscated cannabis in the middle of the night aboard planes flown into the Redway airport by German nationals in 1994.

Re: “Eureka Ordered to Pay $90K in Police Video Case

"So what are your guys gonna do with the 90K? Built a new breakroom, with blackjack and hookers?"

The award is to me, not the North Coast Journal. However, I am intrigued with your suggestion and request you tell me more about these "blackjack and hookers" of which you speak.

Re: “Civility Now

I promise the public will not hold accountable any representative of the public who lets their constituents know how they vote. It's absurd to disallow the very transparancy we need. On the contrary, any representative of the public who wants to formally punish their peers for voicing their vote is the exact kind of shady politician nobody wants. It's the people's job to decide if a politician doesn't deserve the job. Their ethics supposedly got them the job in the first place. Knowing who our government votes for should be mandatory.

Re: “Civility Now

Great coverage, Kimberly.

I would have completely voted yes over this was it not for the ability to endorse future candidates. Name recognition from endorsements can help candidates win elections. I'm not one to take offense to someone not endorsing me but I see the argument that the other council members raised that it could. I guess I was thinking of the bigger picture, whether it be endorsing people, or endorsing organizations such as climate action groups etc. A bit of weight is lost in the endorsement process if you can't list your full title, especially people who are not familiar with the community or does not look too deep into public office holders and know everyone's names.

It would be nice in helping to get future candidates to run for office to have the ability to back them not just with a name, but a title as well. But I guess I also forget that people can hold grudges over the smallest of things such as not getting endorsed by someone. It is what it is and maybe it's actually for the best. Perhaps other government organizations in our community can follow suit with the code of ethics we passed.

Cheers!

Re: “Blind, Sick, Alone

HOW does this facility keep their license? This incident is so unacceptable, who took the person to the motel? Family not being notified, a modern day horror story. Punishing the poor, weak, and disabled.

Re: “Service Call

Religion and government do not mix. I find it to be irresponsible governance when a highly religious and extreme right wing evangelical politician is making decisions for the people. Those decisions will no doubt be skewed toward the favor and benefit of a few, not the populace as a whole.
