Re: “Online Fortuna Fire Comments Spark Controversy

I agree that the firefighters shouldn't have to read the comments and the comments should also remain.
It is all still better than the days when living in a small community without plains and cars when all there was was ink and gossip for info and public mobs...oh wait, maybe that led to more empathy? Don't think so.

Re: “Community

Oooops. It seems that I was confused. A state of mind that is becoming all too frequent.
Anyway, I now know for sure that Redway really is in Humboldt County and not in the Central Valley.
Must have been something that I smoked.

Re: “Online Fortuna Fire Comments Spark Controversy

reynard, more likely i think he may be have been unfamiliar w/how the anonymous commenters on the internet work. especially those who are always going to be there with a bad attitude and a bunch of blather, no matter what the topic.

i'm positive mr. Winburn is too familiar with & being honest in his assessment of how his personnel feel and the toll paid even without the bs that some will throw out.

please, fortuna firefighters, know for certain - ignorant written comments directed at you were made by those who chose being anonymous for a good reason - they lack strength of character and have little ability to deal with being told by their peers their machinations are without merit. have they ever earned a pat on the back?

anonymous commenters are hiding in shadows, throwing shit and fanning embers & their egos (no matter what the web site).
--- every firefighter wears their name in huge bold lettering on their back, a firefighter must check their ego at the door of an emergent task so as to get that job done safely, not as one man but as a team for the overall good of all.
firefighter don't look for pat on the back for the job done with great valor.
i pity these miserable commenters - they do prove they have too much to say concerning that which they do not & can not know.

Re: “Online Fortuna Fire Comments Spark Controversy

This is interesting. I can understand and support Winburn's standing, but the press also. It's neither that is causing this conflict, it's the public comments. What I don't understand and find hard to accept, are the toxic comments and opinions of people that are broadcast and can be hard to dismiss on the receiving end. And a lot of the time, the 'opinions' or remarks are not from a knowledgeable stance but personal & biased opinion without all the facts. Sometimes it's best to say nothing at all!!

Winburn is clearly unfamiliar with how the internets work. Also the First Amendment.

Re: “EPD Retracts Plans for Homeless Meal Voucher System

We would modify ours, if it is even feasible, to fit the needs and capabilities of our community. We're just trying to control behavior, reduce crime and disorder problems, and improve the safety and beauty of our Old Town area (and the rest of the city) through creative crime fighting that is firm when needed but fair. Think outside the box and find other options beyond just enforcement. You sound interested. Why don't you help us find a solution? Contact our Homeless Programs Manager Lynette Mullen ( if you've got a better idea or want to help us find one.

Re: “EPD Retracts Plans for Homeless Meal Voucher System

I find this interesting in that the program in Santa Cruz that Watson talks about has not started yet so there is no way to know if it is a good idea or not. The Santa Cruz program is believed to cost around $400,000 this year. They closed the emergency shelter because of a short fall of $600,000. The shelter not only provided a place for people to sleep but showers, meals and mail service. Something is wrong here.

"Watson said his team was exploring a different approach similar to that implemented by a nonprofit in Santa Cruz, which recruits homeless people as volunteers for beautification projects, rewarding the effort with gift certificates for laundry or transportation needs."

Re: “EPD Retracts Plans for Homeless Meal Voucher System

Homeless need and we need to treat them as INDIVIDUALS. We won't diminish the numbers unless we treat them as the individuals that they are. Relying on religious organizations (with agendas, even when hidden) should be ILLEGAL. SOME homeless would benefit from community service and volunteering OTHERS are :
1. suffering and in need of R&R, mental health care etc. WE DON"T ASK THOSE WITH SIGNIFICANT PHYSICAL issues like cancer to volunteer WHILE fighting the disease yet we subject those with mental health problems to higher expectations than the general public who does not volunteer especially at random ..they volunteer if and when and for what they choose.
2. and/or needing to recoup and then need to spend all of their time finding ways to survive ..housing, work or whatever. Looking for work is a full-time job!! Especially a livable wage when you are over 50!

Volunteerism is great if you are retired AND don't have to work or have a partner who supports you or a family inheritance or whatever.

Re: “UPDATED: Chief Mills' Last Day Set for July 21

IF only everybody knew what really happened.
The night Tommy died the officers were under the control of Sgt. Stephens, The events reported were inaccurate and misleading. The police claim Tommy had a confrontation with a person that drove up driving a dark colored Ford truck. I seen the persons statement, there was never a confrontation between the driver and Tommy to justify such a concern. During the trial Sgt. Stephens sat with Linfoot at the defense table. I watched Stephens texting on his cell phone, most of the time holding his phone in his lap just under the table. I couldn't help but to think that he must have thought the rules of the courtroom did not apply to him or he was above any consequences. Every elected officials have the ability to do what is right and what's expected of them, Eureka City's Council has the same ability. This is not an isolated instance, there's a serious threat to the welfare and safety to the people in Eureka. The Mayor, is a former EPD officer, he has not taken a stand to protect the people in the community. Members of the city council, have delegated their responsibilities, they have not acted within the scope of their authority. When police officers or elected officials abandon or abuse their power, we are all put in danger.
I have always admired and respect law enforcement, the death of Tommy has not changed that. Unfortunately, I assumed that all officers are honest so the ones that are not don't take their position very seriously. The officers illegal and unethical actions were a state violation of Tommy's individual constitutional rights, law-enforcement are here to protect us not jeopardize our lives.
That night Tommy was killed, the officers operational plan was based on an unreliable tip Stephens received from some girl walking down the street late at night. Stephens was the first officer to confront Tommy. Tommy and his cousin and his cousins wife had returned home after they celebrated Tommys cousins birthday, yes Tommy and his cousin were drinking but they did the responsible thing and made arrangements to have a designated driver. Stephens pulled up on Tommy in the dark, just after midnight started yelling and pointing a gun at him. Tommy was standing up on his porch, posting to Facebook, his Facebook timeline shows him texting at 12:25am thanking his cousins wife for a good time and again at 12:27am Tommy was shot at 12:30am.
Stephens stated as he commanded Tommy to "Come Down Here Now" and "Put Your Hands Up" Stephens claimed Tommy showed resistance, but Tommy did not, he put his hands up, stepped off the porch and started walking down to the officer. Just because Tommy was asking, "what's going on?" "why are you doing this to me?" "what did I do?" Questions are not acts of resistance. Linfoot describes the encounter as a fishing expedition. It's my belief the officers provoked and instigated the altercation with McClain the officers actions were unprovoked and lacked provocation. Linfoot said everyone out there was saying the same thing, there was no conflicting demands being made which he knows can confuse the situation. It was very specific "Keep Your Hands Up" Stephens, Harkness and McElroy backed up his story. Harpham asked... where was Thomas located? Linfoot answers, He was just walking in a straight pathway off of the porch, he just continued to walk straight.
Linfoot states he was comfortable with Tommy's actions, he was doing what he was instructed to do.
Officer Linfoots actions were excessive and performed with a deliberate indifference to the circumstances. Law enforcement officers must take into account the totality of the circumstances. The objective factor is to determine the reasonableness of force. Tommy McClain did not commit any violation or offense, he wasn't wanted for any contravention or malefaction, he did not attempt to resist or evade apprehension. Mr. McClain was cooperative and responded to the verbal commands, the length Tommy walked as Stephens commanded him to "Come Down Here Now" the was a significant distance and showed a willingness to comply. The officers vehicles are equipped with Watch Sentinel Surveillance System, albeit it does not show the accrual shooting Tommy is up in his yard out of the camera's view. The video taken from Sergeant Stephens car will show, Linfoot barreling around the corner from the west side, he jumps out of his quad car pulls his firearm and points it in the direction where Tommy McClain was standing. The audio from Linfoot's car has confirmed all the officers simultaneously yelling conflicting commands such as get down, get down hear right now. Tommy slightly lowered his hands and hesitated but quickly bringing them back up again as the officers yelled even louder "keep your hands up, "keep your hands up, . The last commands heard on the audio is the voice of officer Linfoot yelling "Get Down" and another officer yelling "stop."stop" stop" during trial Mr. Galipo asked Linfoot if he recognize the voice that yelled "Get Down" Linfoot stated he believed it was his voice he heard.
Blaming Tommmy for dropping his hand is a ridiculous excuse for Linfoots for own actions. Mills concluded that the utilization of force was justified and dismissed all inopportune police conduct. But the investigation was predicated on fallacious information that was propitious to his officers and the department. The outcome of the investigation was reached from a plenarily partialness conclusion by consummately ignoring the facts that the officer's own temerarious or deliberate conduct during the initial contact with Tommy unreasonably created a situation, that evidently ended the life of Tommy James McClain. EPD Ronald Harpham labeled the death of Tommy justified homicide. A mistake is never justified and Linfoots intentions to shoot Tommy on the ground was not a mistake. Tommy's death certificate says, he was in altercation but all he was doing was standing outside in his yard..........
Sgt. Stephens might not have killed Tommy, but he certainly lacks integrity by not coming forward with the truth, completely disregarded any concern for the Publics Safety. When it comes to law-enforcement standing agents these types of wrong doings is more important then defending them.

Re: “UPDATE: Fortuna City Manager Arrested for Second DUI

Maybe the conservative little town of Fortuna ought to forbid the sale of alcohol within city limits. You know, sort of like the cannibis ban.

Re: “Off the Top

I find it appalling that a cna would leave a bathroom in that condition. We also employ housekeepers that clean the rooms daily and as a manager I have room rounds to make sure the needs of the residents are being met. It's called team work what a great idea people working together. A lot of people find fault with the man who owns our buildings I find fault with our fabulous elected officials and the people who stand on a soap box and talk poop about something they have never done before. I would like to see them work for 8 hours side by side with our aides then let them comment about how our residents are being treated. And if for some strange reason the family's members think they can do a better job take your parents home. Let's see if you can be as understanding and caring as our staff when you have to clean up after them feed them and hold them when they cry because your not there. Without our facilities alot of elderly people would have no where to call home. The captain of our ship makes sure we have all the supplies needed to care for our residents. I am proud to say that I work in a great facility we are a team.

My name is Sandra Williams and I think we all need to keep an open mind. People that work together for the greater good get further than one person with a negative attitudes.

Re: “Eureka, Meet Your Captains

With so many claim that Tommy McClain was reaching for a gun, with all the claims that the McClain family was happy with the outcome. I don't understand why the truth was withheld from the public. Everybody wants to make up there mind about a sitituation and have no idea what the truth really is. Tommy McClain lost his life for no reason. Can anybody put themselves in the same place in time, go out with family to celebrate a birthday, have one of the best times of your life, not knowing death is waiting for you rite around the corner. By the same people who swore to keep you safe. To top it all off, the cover-UPS made over and over again. Then to sit and read all the comment about my son, some good but most bad by all you people of Eureka, ca. While I sit and read all of you just bash my sons character and who he was. Now later on down the road a few years later, alot of the truth comes out and you find out how wrong you were. Shame on you, all of you. Tommy was a good person even now that he is gone, I can hear him forgiving the ones who ran his name throu the mud, that's the person he was. He was big hearted, kind, and helped out any way that he could.

When was the last significant tsunami in Humboldt? Does anyone know? It seems like our bay has a very different and favorable configuration than Crescent City.

Re: “Off the Top

The audit should be more than what is spent financially, but on th level of care because they do not have staff to care for those in their care.

A nursing aid is to give each patient 10 minutes per hour and also write a report on the care these individuals received - hard to do if they are expect to care for more than 5 - 6 patients an hour and then expected to write the report on their on time.

These facilities are poorly staffed, not because of those working there, but because of upper management not supporting the needs of the patients or staff of the facility.

The committee reviewing this need stakeholders to include users (or past users) of the services offered. I know from my experience (living in one for 6 months) and visiting local facilities the past 40 years there are several points I can point to that need to be addressed - again, it is not the staff present, but the lack of staff being asked to do the impossible relatives of the individuals cannot do!

Re: “Buddy's Blues

A man with a unique background in the blues - not many who have played with AND experienced Big Mama Thornton, George "Harmonica" Smith, Louisiana Red and others...and who lays claim to such a down-in-the-alley style amid all the watered-down, relative blues pop that's everywhere. Catch him locally - he's never boring! Thanks for the informative article.
