Re: “Patchwork Victories for the Crabs

OK Thomas, good blog but, you need to work on your movie history. Probably just too young but "Johnny Utah" was played by Keanu Reeves. Patrick Swayze was zen master "Bohdi".

Re: “Patchwork Victories for the Crabs

I wanted to put you that very small remark in order to give many thanks once again for those pleasing advice you have contributed here. It was really seriously open-handed with you to make extensively all that most people would have offered for an electronic book in order to make some bucks for their own end, even more so now that you could possibly have tried it in the event you desired.

Re: “Huffman Helps Pass Minimum Wage Bill; Legislation DOA in Republican Senate

Huffman says, "That means the legislation would have no direct impact in Huffman's district. In the press release, he explained that he's supporting the measure because he thinks it would give minimum wage workers a "fair shake" and be good for the economy."

What a crock, evidently he's not been a businessman or he'd know you can't give raises without increased production. Just how is this going to benefit those layed off? How does it benefit those with increased workload because of layoffs? How is it not going to effect his district? Does his district have no employees? How is this going to help employment when employers limit their crew to just 25 employees? What a dumbass! The government should not control wages, that is the definition of fascism. Look it up. Less taxes, less government is more economic freedom. The solution to being under payed is get a better paying job or start your own company as I did.

Re: “'Outside the Box'

"Ambitious"???

Despite every Housing Element's proposals in addressing housing needs through many alternatives...only a tiny fraction of "low and very low" income housing are ever permitted. In all fairness, "moderate and above" housing should be frozen until a closer balance is achieved...unless you simply enjoy complaining about destitution, despair, addiction and homelessness.

Nothing will get done as long as the current political leadership and their appointees and staff stick to the usual ambiguous language "suggesting" that local government actually ensure balanced housing inventories that serve all economic class of residents.

Re: “That Van Life

Not one mention in this long article explaining just how toxic these "recreational" vehicle's are from off-gassing? How many children are being exposed? Windshields are the worst, adding to a smorgasbord of toxic adhesives, heavy metals (aluminum), paints, foam, vehicle lubricants, fuel fumes, asbestos and preservatives all condensed into a small living area.

Best to buy an old model.

Instead of taking minimal steps to mitigate the recurring collapse of the next housing fraud, (the primary cause of affordable housing shortages), Humboldt County and Eureka are approving more places for victims...selling valuable bay property for another predatory "recreational" vehicle "campground" profiteer. And "consideration" of humane car-parks, shelters and SRO's. (About time...)

Meanwhile, 250 more big homes are planned behind the Redwood Acres race track further enriching the development industry, profiting each time big homes are built, sold, foreclosed and resold, collecting their windfall until the next looming bailout while creating more infrastructure liabilities that end up being paid for by people who can't afford to live there.

The number of economic refugees living in vehicles and tents is staggering and growing rapidly. Take away the color images and it looks more like the 1930's every day...including the rise of fascism.

Re: “'Outside the Box'

Bongio and Ulansey are just right-wingers who want to eliminate any and all regulations so that they can make even MORE money. Neither have the interests of the public in mind, only personal profits.

Re: “Draft Housing Element Calls for Drastic Solutions to Humboldt's Housing 'Crisis'

Ulansey is what's laughable. He is a right-wing moron only interested in lining his pockets with money. He has never had the interests of the public in mind.

Re: “'Outside the Box'

The homeless problem is directly connected to the tax code which allows real estate investment corporations and other speculators to buy up vast real estate holdings, then use them as a direct write-off on their taxes on their other profitable enterprises in other locals. Through depreciation and other mechanisms they can avoid taxes and declare a loss. They prefer to have property management firms minimally maintain the unoccupied property and thus avoid tenant complications. This causes artificial scarcity, and high cost rents beyond average pay which has not kept pace. British Columbia passed a law to combat this problem by levying a very high TAX on buildings held vacant. This is the simple answer to homelessness! ! !

Re: “More Than 200 Protest Immigrant Detention Centers

Thanks for covering this but there wasn't much of substance in the reporting here. I don't know who the speakers are or what was said, aside from some generalities. Maybe the print edition will have more?
