Re: “Online Fortuna Fire Comments Spark Controversy

This is interesting. I can understand and support Wilburn's standing. Holy shit, tell your kids to stop giving a fuck about the internet, stop staring at screens all day yourselves. Teachers, politicians, media reps, PARENTS are setting the worst example possible then scratching their heads over why internet commentary is as it is. Get the fuck over that bullshit, retards...your literally retarded, I agree that the firefighters shouldn't have to read the comments and the comments should also remain. It is all still better than the days when living in a small community without plains and cars when all there was was ink and gossip for info and public mobs. Thank you for sharing your blog

With due respect to Ken Yanosko, a partial eclipse will never be life-changing. You'll never be the same after viewing a total solar eclipse.

Re: “Denied: Appellate Court Rejects Rechnitz Appeal for Change of Venue

lucky for Mr. Shlomo there will be space at the airfield (Murray Field) for his private jet!!! And I am sure one or two of his local minions can chauffeur him back and forth....and I am certain Seaview can find a lovely room for he and the lovely Mrs Shlomo to stay, at a reasonable rate......and the meals will be elegant also....just ask the residents!!!!!!!!!

Re: “Denied: Appellate Court Rejects Rechnitz Appeal for Change of Venue

If you take on the duty to provide care whether paid or unpaid and fail to reasonable provide that care resulting in significant injury or death to the patient, it's a class C Felony in Oregon. From what I know about this case, the nursing not only failed to provide the care, but abandon him. Someone should go to jail for this. Having been a part of licensing these facilities and investigating abuse in facilities for 10 years in Oregon, I saw a lot. These corporation hide behind a room of attorneys and vigorously fight any investigation where they were found abusive or not providing reasonable care. Yet they are willing to tell families..yes we can provide for your family member at horrible rates and fail to provide the care. I applaud the courts. As for a fair trial.. um no matter where it is once the facts are heard, um I think venue will be the least of their problems.

Re: “Court Cracks Down on Skipping Jury Duty

True but if the courts pay them more, then we have to pay more taxes to make this worthwhile to a bunch of people to sit around and most are ultimately dismissed... just doesn't seem very efficient. Maybe if we give some more tax breaks to the super-rich then it will trickle down and there will be plenty of riches for everyone and everything will work out after all.

Re: “Study of NFL Brains 'Reinforcing' for Local Concussion Awareness Efforts

There is a website I value and follow which examines press releases and reporting on medical issues, particularly 'headline' stories.
The main website is https://www.healthnewsreview.org/
They send out a weekly email which I receive.
The most recent email had this story about this issue. Those interested in brain damage from concussions may want to read it and follow up on their own:

Brain damage in the NFL: under-recognized at first; now likely overstated
https://www.healthnewsreview.org/2017/07/b…

Even supposedly 'serious' newspapers give in and sensationalize health stories to get people to read them which does the reader a disservice.

Re: “What’s Humboldt Funding? Wrecks, Pets and Murder on the Internet

i would like to know what "family member" is denying this about my fathers death. I am his first born daughter and dont want anymore lies spread about him. i was never notified by the authority of his death and we made plans days before his death about seeing each other. None of his long time friends have expressed that he would ever feel death by suicide would be the answer and he strongly believed against being cremated. His heartless wife has not reached out to me and i had to find out about his passing way passed his actual death but she had enough strength to get the insurance money within the same week. if you're going to write about someone passing do the person's life justice. he served in the navy for over 20 years and doesnt deserve this nonchalant attitude.

Re: “Supes Take Needed Step to Protect Our Coast

Very hypocritical of the same board of supervisors who reduced riparian buffers for development right here in their own county, despite plenty of protest.

Re: “EPD Retracts Plans for Homeless Meal Voucher System

I find it absolutely disgusting that EPD would even consider a program that uses starvation as a punishment tool. Can you say, "obvious human rights violation" boys and girls? But then again, EPD has quite the reputation for human rights violations.

Re: “Online Fortuna Fire Comments Spark Controversy

reynard, more likely i think he may be have been unfamiliar w/how the anonymous commenters on the internet work. especially those who are always going to be there with a bad attitude and a bunch of blather, no matter what the topic.

i'm positive mr. Winburn is too familiar with & being honest in his assessment of how his personnel feel and the toll paid even without the bs that some will throw out.

please, fortuna firefighters, know for certain - ignorant written comments directed at you were made by those who chose being anonymous for a good reason - they lack strength of character and have little ability to deal with being told by their peers their machinations are without merit. have they ever earned a pat on the back?

anonymous commenters are hiding in shadows, throwing shit and fanning embers & their egos (no matter what the web site).
--- every firefighter wears their name in huge bold lettering on their back, a firefighter must check their ego at the door of an emergent task so as to get that job done safely, not as one man but as a team for the overall good of all.
firefighter don't look for pat on the back for the job done with great valor.
i pity these miserable commenters - they do prove they have too much to say concerning that which they do not & can not know.

Re: “Online Fortuna Fire Comments Spark Controversy

This is interesting. I can understand and support Winburn's standing, but the press also. It's neither that is causing this conflict, it's the public comments. What I don't understand and find hard to accept, are the toxic comments and opinions of people that are broadcast and can be hard to dismiss on the receiving end. And a lot of the time, the 'opinions' or remarks are not from a knowledgeable stance but personal & biased opinion without all the facts. Sometimes it's best to say nothing at all!!

Winburn is clearly unfamiliar with how the internets work. Also the First Amendment.

Re: “EPD Retracts Plans for Homeless Meal Voucher System

We would modify ours, if it is even feasible, to fit the needs and capabilities of our community. We're just trying to control behavior, reduce crime and disorder problems, and improve the safety and beauty of our Old Town area (and the rest of the city) through creative crime fighting that is firm when needed but fair. Think outside the box and find other options beyond just enforcement. You sound interested. Why don't you help us find a solution? Contact our Homeless Programs Manager Lynette Mullen (lmullen@ci.eureka.ca.gov) if you've got a better idea or want to help us find one.

Re: “EPD Retracts Plans for Homeless Meal Voucher System

I find this interesting in that the program in Santa Cruz that Watson talks about has not started yet so there is no way to know if it is a good idea or not. The Santa Cruz program is believed to cost around $400,000 this year. They closed the emergency shelter because of a short fall of $600,000. The shelter not only provided a place for people to sleep but showers, meals and mail service. Something is wrong here.

"Watson said his team was exploring a different approach similar to that implemented by a nonprofit in Santa Cruz, which recruits homeless people as volunteers for beautification projects, rewarding the effort with gift certificates for laundry or transportation needs."

Re: “EPD Retracts Plans for Homeless Meal Voucher System

Homeless need and we need to treat them as INDIVIDUALS. We won't diminish the numbers unless we treat them as the individuals that they are. Relying on religious organizations (with agendas, even when hidden) should be ILLEGAL. SOME homeless would benefit from community service and volunteering OTHERS are :
1. suffering and in need of R&R, mental health care etc. WE DON"T ASK THOSE WITH SIGNIFICANT PHYSICAL issues like cancer to volunteer WHILE fighting the disease yet we subject those with mental health problems to higher expectations than the general public who does not volunteer especially at random ..they volunteer if and when and for what they choose.
2. and/or needing to recoup and then need to spend all of their time finding ways to survive ..housing, work or whatever. Looking for work is a full-time job!! Especially a livable wage when you are over 50!

Volunteerism is great if you are retired AND don't have to work or have a partner who supports you or a family inheritance or whatever.
