Re: “Cannibal Lancetfish

From time to time we see these beautiful fish washed up on local shores. Their home range extends down over a mile deep. While I had thought from some morphological composition, that they stayed pretty deep (about 2,000 ft in the day), I suspect that they rise and descend in that happy crowd called the deep scattering layer by early navy sonarmen.

the Lancet's huge gape along with the rather transparent teeth are characteristics of those who live in the dark with limited access to lots of food including those on the chain up from organisms that fix calcium.

These are astonishingly beautiful animals, and strangely that large dorsal fin is a trait of some of the fastest fish existing. The sailfish extends its very similar back fin in order to change course as agilely as the smaller prey it eats, and their narrow bodies are indicative of the magnificent ambush predator, the Great Barracuda who, when moderate in size, can flash to different positions more quickly than the eye can follow.

But I suppose we have to go with any discoveries by cellular biologists, who must have been the source of the suggestion that Lancets are slow. Perhaps their morphology is relative to the other more benthic fish, some of whom only catch dinner a few times of year, and so benefit from a torpid existence.
On the other hand, exploring the hormonal and smooth muscle of someone like the rattlesnake, we find that some bodies actually develop in response to a NEED for lunch. That particular beauty increases anabolic activity that restores a digestive system withered from the once-a-month or twice-a-year dining event. We have only recently learned some of the cognitive and social capacities of fish, and know far less about the periodic physiological changes that occur in aquatic species. We mostly see 'em when they are drowning in a foreign milieu, close to or already dead.

When you come across a Lancet or a giant red squid, or some other mysterious old relative of ours (I have only come across two salps in my life, both on the same day!), it's a lot of fun to identify and find out more about its life and home.

I spent much of the first decades of my life in the sea, and have been saddened by the absence of the tremendous densities of fish and other organisms I can still picture, only in my mind. You can't imagine how once common were 16-18 ft. sharks, opaque walls of schooling fish and birds, or 500 pound grouper and even larger rays, flying through the world outside our knowledge. There are two generations older than me still living, and so the loss has been lightning fast as well as catastrophic.

Re: “State Accuses Eureka Doc of Negligence

My father was a patient of Dr Palmer for over 35 years. He performed an cardiac/thoracic aneurism repair and several smaller surgeries over that time. He always showed respect, kindness and compassion. Most important, he was forthright & honest with him up until the time my Dad passed away from cancer at age 84. My father had strong faith in Dr Palmer. Mainly because he always considered my Dad's well-being uppermost. This resulted in a peace of mind for my Dad that helped him cope.

Re: “Judge Cuts to the Chase in Public Defender Lawsuit

The turmoil he's caused that the judge wants to silence is proof that the low qualification interpretation is wrong. Someone as qualified as the plaintiffs say he should be to be hired, would not cause such strife.

Re: “Bass Announces $4.8 Million Federal Grant, Ramped Up Needle Disposal Efforts at Packed Opioid Town Hall

So these opioid users are predominately native Humboldtians or imports?

Needles - double edged sword, 90% needle return rate data is not believeable.....

How many millions in costs as a result of "build it and they will come"?

Will it turn out like the AGAPE HOUSE.....? Too early to tell says the 8 ball......

Needle users routinely cause other problems too because most are already douches in life......lazy, liars, irresponsible, etc....rather walk over a cleaner dirty needle on the sidewalk than puke, spit, feces, etc......but who picks up dog poop, or their own butthole proceeds to mankind's generously unprincipled society.....

Do the drug abusers who use the services pay back the fed/state treasuries the 4.8 million buckaroonies??????

That is why this grant is nonsensical......if Apple or Microsoft can buy land to build a city, then why can't a specific city be built for drug abusers only.......good people don't want LOSER abusers in our communities...... Very few abusers are good folk......most are scum.

Re: “A Men's Guide to Surviving a Sexual Harassment Witch Hunt

Avoid women at work. You will be 50% more productive and the 3% of serious professional women will be the no nonsense type you will never have a problem with anyway.
A logical professional woman that hasn't made her career a half assed joke having kids is a rarity. If your female and this offends you then you know it's true.

Re: “A Homeless Survival Guide

For years Eureka's predatory industries have grown exponentially.

They are equally responsible for turning poor residents into the destitute.

Re: “The Impossible Possible

There are empty houses lining the streets of every city. Is it so hard to let people into the homes that absolutely no one is using? Who wants to buy a house in a time when we still have to fight for clean water and food without rot? How can anyone afford the ungodly system that keeps anyone who really needs it out of luck or home? Who can afford 2000 a month in rent? Hell who can afford 700 rent unless you bust multiple jobs and hope to have time to sleep at night on top of all the other responsibilities one has to manage.

Re: “Can Humboldt County Solve Addiction?

Did not know if you were aware that The Agape House closed down on Friday Nov 10th. Ligia Giovannini was less than honest with her residence. They had no idea she was ill-managing funds and without warning, 13 residents were ordered evicted from their home. They are now homeless, left scrambling for a place to live. Specifics are fuzzy at this point, but the fact is these girls and the Assistant manager of the Agape House are without a place to live.

Re: “A Men's Guide to Surviving a Sexual Harassment Witch Hunt

Christopher Boyle, thats a great not all men critique of this article, but sadly you missed the point.

I understand your desperate need to defend men, being one yourself, but wouldnt your energy be better served addressing the men you know and interact with, instead of further talking down to women who actually experience this on a regular basis?

Statistically, 1 in 5 women are sexually assaulted in this country..... Thats a lot of low hanging fruit, huh?
