Re: “The Market

Lynn, I loved your article about Fieldbrook Market & Eatery. For the store I nearly go back to the beginning of the store. Wilma Wymer was the owner at that time. My Dad Louis Macinata moved in to help Wilma with the store. After my Dad died in 1964, Wilma sold the store to John in 1965. I never knew his last name. I did go into the store a few times after that. John did a little remodeling of the store. He took the wall our between the two rooms. He still lived in the back of the old store. I was saddened when the store burned down. A lot of my childhood memories went with it. The penny candy jar that sat on the counter. I used to raid it daily. The pop machine next to the door (bottle of pop 10cents). Going into Eureka to get supplies for the store. After John rebuilt and sold the store. I did meet the owner in 1972 and again in 2003. He knew who I was in 2003. He asked me if I wanted to buy the store. I told him no. Anyway love the article and hope nothing but the best for the new owners. I really don't know if I will ever get to see it again. I will always have those memories.

Re: “Backyard of Boats

I was stationed at the Coast Guard's lifeboat station in 1957. Humboldt Bay was a pretty busy port back then. There was ocean going shipping back then, and a war surplus cargo ship converted to a lumber schooner named the C-Trader, and the Hunter and Folland whalers. I enjoyed your article, thanks.

Re: “The Craftsman

I worked at Blue Ox as a millwright, truck driver and general hand in 1979-80. That was also the time in which my father was dying of cancer, and Eric and Viviana were both employers and Mom & Dad to me. Eric's poetry about what he and his comrades went through in Vietnam was deeply moving to me, and their work with Veterans is a national treasure. I look forward to seeing The Veterans' Monologues Project when it comes to town. Bob Olofson, Eureka, CA.

I served with Eric and the 101st Airborne in the boonies of Viet Nam in 1968. He and the rest of our squad reunited for the first time at Fort Campbell three years ago. Get on the Blue Ox website, watch the video. You will be truly enriched. He makes me proud. Dodie Gaines, Los Gatos, CA.

Re: “Iron in the Blood

Yes, I love that moment of opening the doors of the shop - all at rest - then with the fire lit, the iron hot, all is transformed. Wonderous!

Re: “Home Track

He's a well liked teacher, and will be missed. Enjoyed getting to know more about the man who my daughter calls her 'favorite'. Great article!

Re: “The Horsewoman

This is one special lady. She took the time to insteal a love of horses in my grand kids when she didn't have to and when I'm sure she was tired and would have rather rested but now one of my grand daughters just won her first buckle and horses all started with, "Sis" taking them on her horses at camp just because she is that kind of special.
